The Story

Hello! I’m Gemma Lisi, the face behind Arcus Aesthetics.

My passion for beauty began in childhood, often sneaking into my sister's room to play with her makeup (I still do sometimes, haha!). As I progressed through secondary school, I developed a thirst for knowledge; in any topic that interested me, I wanted to understand not just what happens, but how and why it happens. This drive for excellence, whether being the first to finish an assignment or striving for top marks, has always been part of who I am. It fuels my desire to provide the best for my clients, ensuring they receive the highest quality care and expertise. I am committed to ongoing learning because I want to deliver the best version of myself to each person who walks through my door. At Arcus, my mission is to enhance your natural confidence and reveal your best self, all while making the experience as positive and uplifting as it can be. I’m excited to share my journey, and passion for aesthetics with you.

A New Beginning

I moved back home from Manchester in 2016 as my husband (Guy) and I got ready to welcome our first child. During this time of finding my feet again, my sister encouraged me to try the new trend at the time, Microblading, saying I always had a good eye. She has always been my biggest supporter. I decided to take the plunge and thoroughly researched the best training providers. After securing a loan from my parents, that I wasn't too sure I could pay back, I travelled to Glasgow to train with a company that prioritised health and safety—a commitment that continues to guide my work today.

When I returned after my training, I was excited to start but quickly realised that my sisters hair salon wasn't going to meet licensing regulation. I had to think of something fast, I looked locally but the prices were astronomical, as a new mum I was only looking at working a couple of days a week. I would barely be making the money I was expected to pay in rent never mind bring a wage in. I went back to scouring the internet for a solution, I found a fit for purpose studio that I could make small monthly payments towards and best of all I could have it in my back garden. This cosy studio has become my sanctuary, giving me the space I need to grow as a professional while managing the challenges of family.

Crafting My Passion

In my new venture, I quickly learned the value of offering services that I genuinely enjoyed. I found that eyelash and eyebrow enhancements were a natural fit, given my start in permanent makeup. While I did well with nails for a short time, a shoulder injury led me to prioritise what I truly enjoyed. This choice drives my passion and dedication to providing excellent treatments.

I've always had a bit of a perfectionist streak, not because I think perfection is possible, but because I genuinely care about delivering the best for my clients. I do push myself, and at times, I can be my own harshest critic when I fall short of my expectations. However, seeing the positive changes and transformations in my clients' lives make every moment of effort truly rewarding.

I have a strong passion for learning and often find myself enrolling in numerous masterclasses and courses. Although, I've realised that I need to keep this enthusiasm on a tight leash to avoid overwhelming myself both financially and mentally.

My Journey into Aesthetics

My passion for beauty naturally led me to explore the science that underpins it. Initially, I didn't consider a career in aesthetics because the path to competency seemed inadequate—especially for those without a medical background. A traditional nursing role didn't feel like the right fit for me, and the training options available at the time for non-medical professionals did not instil me with confidence.

In 2021, the Qualifi Level 7 in Aesthetic Practice qualification, regulated and recognised by Ofqual, was introduced. This ground breaking qualification is accessible to medics and non medics alike, aiming to bridge the gap in knowledge and competency within the aesthetics industry. Progressing through the necessary levels to reach Level 7 ensures a comprehensive understanding and skill set in aesthetics. In my opinion, all professionals entering this field should undertake Level 7 to specialise.

As I write this, regulations within the UK—and potentially differing regulations in Scotland—are evolving, and I am committed to meeting these new standards, whatever they may be.

I feel that enhancing qualifications like Level 7, possibly through additional practical placements and advanced training to align with medical degree standards can allow for speciality. Accountability through medical governing body registration seems to be the most logical specialised path forward (but hey, what do I know).

I firmly believe that achieving results isn't enough; one must be confident in their knowledge to ensure the safety, well-being, and psychosocial health of clients. Upholding the highest ethical standards, being prepared to handle any complications, and educating clients on what to expect should be the minimum in our industry. Continuous professional development and accountability are essential to maintain trust and excellence in our practice.

Looking Ahead

In shaping my future in aesthetics, I aim to work alongside fellow professionals to build a strong network focused on safety and shared knowledge for our community. I’m currently in the process of upgrading my little studio to comply with Health Improvement Scotland standards. While expanding my space is something I might consider in the future, for now, my clients value the privacy and personalised experience that my studio offers. Rest assured, I will uphold the ever changing UK regulations to ensure we proceed in the best way possible going forward, even if that means going down a diverted path to get back to where I am.

Life can be a balancing act. Like so many other people out there, juggling work, family (third child on the way), and ongoing studies often leaves me feeling stretched thin, I don't know how people can make it look so easy!!  I am forever advancing and expanding my knowledge in this field and it's worth it for the safety and benefit of my clients.
